The coronavirus pandemic is affecting people throughout the world and forcing many employees out of work. While many of the business closures are done to prevent the spread of the coronavirus, it is still creating a financial hardship for millions of people. With government funding slow to take affect and businesses reluctant to pay their employees for sitting at home, many employers are weighing the decision to furlough their employees, or keep them working in some capacity.

Essential Or Non-Essential?

There are benefits to both options and the decision typically comes down to an agreement between employer and employee, unless the government has deemed your business ‘non-essential’, then the decision is made for you. But what about private household staff? We are already under stay at home orders in most of the UK and many people have in-house quarters for their private staff. So, what then? Do you furlough your private household staff, potentially putting them in financial danger, or do you let them continue working so they can earn a salary?

In some cases, this could be left up to the individuals themselves and whether or not they feel comfortable working during the coronavirus pandemic, or it could be up to the private household staff agency to decide if they want their employees to work, or not. It can be a very difficult decision for anyone to make, and especially challenging in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic.

The Safety Of Your Staff Is Important

For many elderly people throughout the UK, their private household staff is considered essential to help them maintain their health and mobility, and, as mentioned earlier, sometimes the household staff has in-house quarters which could then be considered working from home. Either way, or whatever decision you make, the safety of your staff is what’s most important. Still, they do need to make a living and being able to work during the coronavirus pandemic could save them from financial ruin, especially if the pandemic continues much longer.

The best way to handle this type of situation is to speak with your household staff and the private household staff agency to create a solution that is ideal for everyone.
